A Little Bit About Turnham Green
Turnham Green was originally a village on the main road between London and the west. It was recorded as ‘Turneham’ in 1235 and ‘Turnhamgrene’ in 1369. On 13 November 1642, the Battle of Turnham Green was fought near here during the First English Civil War resulting in the Parliamentarians blocking the King’s advance on London.
On the battlefield, the engagement resulted in a standoff between the forces of King Charles I and the much larger Parliamentarian army under the command of the Earl of Essex. However in successfully blocking the Royalist army’s way to London, the Parliamentarians gained an important strategic victory because the standoff forced Charles and his army to retreat to Oxford for secure winter quarters.
Today Turnham Green is a public park situated on Chiswick High Road. It is separated in two by a small road. Christ Church stands on the eastern half of the green and a war memorial stands on the eastern corner. On the south side is the old Chiswick Town Hall.
The green is the site of local community events, including a traveling fun fair, church events and charity table-top sales. The Chiswick Farmers and Fine Foods Market is held every Sunday morning in a farmyard setting of Grove Park Farm House. The Tabard on Bath Road near Turnham Green station is known for its William Morris interior.
