A Little Bit About West Brompton
The name refers to the older locality of Brompton to the east, although the areas of South Kensington and Earl’s Court separate West Brompton from its namesake. Whilst in the early part of the 20th century, the whole area between Knightsbridge and West Brompton would have been known as Brompton, modern-day locals would not recognise Brompton and West Brompton as geographically contiguous. Today it still has its own Royal Mail London postcode of SW10 (though that also covers part of Chelsea).
The Brompton Cemetery, with its beautiful basilica and row upon row of rickety graves, is managed by the Royal Parks and is one of the Magnificent Seven – the term applied to the seven large cemeteries in London. Rumour has it that the children’s author Beatrix Potter, who lived in The Boltons nearby, took the names of many of her animal characters from tombstones in the cemetery. Besides the much-loved cemetery West Brompton is best known today for its tube and railway station, the tiny Finborough Theatre and the ever-popular Troubadour, a charmingly bohemian restaurant and live music venue.
Located in post code SW6, West Brompton has a number of high profile schools including
Brompton-Westbrook Primary School, Redcliffe School, The Chelsea Group Of Children and The London Oratory School.
